ADRIAN BATES - Design and Development of Larger, Sculptural Pieces

  • Vessel Ceramics 44A Court Street Moretonhampstead, TQ13 8LG United Kingdom (map)

Adrian Bates Ceramics

Timing: 0930 for 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday

Class Size: Minimum 6, Maximum 8 students

Level: Intermediate/Advanced Some knowledge of slab building would be desirable, but is not essential.

Clay type: Ashraf Hannah

Cost: £365 (pay in full or in instalments)

What you will need: A sketchbook/paper to write down notes. All tools & clay provided but personal tools and aprons welcome.

Aims of the course:

Design and development of larger, sculptural pieces with a particular emphasis on clay preparation, origination of the base, slab preparation and force-drying, joint-work and stability through design.

The workshop is suitable for those with some experience who want to develop their practice, seek to develop their ‘style’ and scale up their making.

There may also be discussion and troubleshooting of drying, firing and glazing as time allows and where there is sufficient demand.

The main method we’ll be exploring is slab-building, but coiling and throwing can be incorporated. Throwing skills would be useful but not essential.

We’ll be using Ashraf Hanna raku clay (Earthstone Professional PF520).

Adrian will begin with a look at his own practice, but will move on to development of students’ own style of vessels or sculpture and the suitability (or otherwise!) of slab building for achieving those aims.

It is possible for students to have work that they have made over the weekend biscuit fired to 1000*C for an extra fee - subject to the dimensions of the studio kilns.

N.B. As always, there is no guarantee that pieces will make it through the firing process intact.

Arian has a background in graphics and teaching and is a master of elegant stoneware and pottery for indoor and outdoor, year-round display.
